In the first story Unicorn and Yeti go camping. Okay, at least Yeti goes camping. Unicorn just may be glamping. Why? So they can make s'mores, of course. In the second story they find a hot spring which is the perfect place for Hazel to create some really funny illustrations! And for the third story I am so thrilled that I got to write a story about the moon being made of cheese. The concept is something that always got me thinking when I was a kid. Plus, Yeti gets to ride on Unicorn's back again, and that, my friends, makes for some great illustration! I could not be more thrilled with the cover of this ninth Unicorn and Yeti book. Razzle Dazzle is available for preorder now from your favorite bookseller.

Heather Ayris Burnell, Children's Book Author
Heather Ayris Burnellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14165769191910279198noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8686862343088549975.post-40879946356147074612023-12-31T14:48:00.000-08:002023-12-31T14:48:42.838-08:00Unicorn and Yeti Fun and Games!
Hello! I seem to have taken a very long break from my blog here. It's my first blog post of 2023 and it's on the last day of the year! But I have not been taking a break from writing. There are now 8 books in the Unicorn and Yeti series! Fun and Games was released on December 26th.

In Fun and Games, Yeti teaches Unicorn how to do a better job at hiding when they play hide and seek because, of course, Yetis are extremely great at hiding. They figure out how to play their favorite games together. Unicorn's favorite is a fancy game while Yeti, like my husband, simply needs a deck of cards. No poker for these two though! In the third story Unicorn and Yeti put a puzzle together. It isn't easy!

I'm always amazed at what I learn when I am writing about these two characters. Apparently, I am quite hard on myself. I mean, I know that, but the simplicity of writing about two characters and the different way they put together a puzzle really illustrated it. I learned that some people actually do look at the puzzle picture when putting a puzzle together. Shocking! I do not. Why do I make it so hard? It's not like there's a rule. Nope, I just like to make things harder.

But it's not hard to get the new Unicorn and Yeti book, or any of the books in the series. They're available from your favorite retailer. And I'm going to try to take it easy on myself in 2024. Maybe I'll even blog a bit. š

Heather Ayris Burnell, Children's Book Author
Heather Ayris Burnellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14165769191910279198noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8686862343088549975.post-30985073736809476252022-12-03T17:25:00.002-08:002022-12-03T17:25:46.973-08:00A Fancy Interview!
Not too terribly long ago, interviewer extraordinaire Patricia J. I don't often talk about all the things I do, but Patricia made it fun and I made a new friend. And now I can also say that I am thrilled to have an interview in Publisher's Weekly! Bonus: The interview features Unicorn and Yeti's brand new book, Stuck With You.

I think my agent, Sean McCarthy, introduces the interview best, "Come for the insight about how being a librarian informs Heather's writing, and stay for the revision/garlic farming metaphor that somehow makes perfect sense."

Pretty good huh? John Schu has so much enthusiasm for books and I always learn about some great new children's books when I watch. (And my heart wants them all!)

So, it is amazing to say that today, Hazel and I were on Book Joy Live with John Schu! It was a lot of fun talking all things Unicorn and Yeti with Hazel and John, plus we did a reader's theater-- we read aloud the first story from Fair and Square (around 18:00). And our Editor, Katie Carella even popped in! It was my first live author appearance and I couldn't have asked for it be more fun.

Thank you to everyone who watched and was so supportive! I loved reading through the comments on the Facebook feed. I've embedded the recording incase you missed it and want to watch. We can all use more book joy in our lives! You can also find the recording on the Scholastic Book Fairs Facebook page and on John Schu's website.

Heather Ayris Burnell, Children's Book Author
Heather Ayris Burnellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14165769191910279198noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8686862343088549975.post-49528888222964398352021-03-02T14:56:00.000-08:002021-03-02T14:56:59.950-08:00Fair and Square!

Hey, hey, it's an exciting day!

Unicorn and Yeti book 5, Fair and Square, is out into the world!

As you can see from the book cover, in Fair and Square Unicorn and Yeti take on painting! When my kids were small we had so many fun painting days. We'd build with blocks and sticks and whatever we could find to make towers and caves and robots--whatever struck our fancy. Our house was also under construction so we always had lots of building going on. My husband
built our house in his time off from working construction, so mornings before work, evenings after, and weekends.

I did a lot of holding up of big pieces of stuff, handing of tools, and nailing of nails--construction support. But let me tell you that a lot of things that you hold up during construction are not easy! And when we built our barn I had to get really high up and I did not have a trusty unicorn to fly me! (I definitely did my best to stay close to a holding place like I am in the picture.) It seems to me that sort of dedication deserves some sort of a medal. But we settled for pie. I made us lots of pies, and that seems to be a better prize anyway. Is the appearance pie in this book a coincidence? I certainly didn't think about it when I was writing the book but now I wonder!

Here's the family building a barn. Do you have a niche picture book and submitting straight to publishers seems to be the best course of action? Do you just like submitting your work yourself? Or do you simply want to learn about picture book publishers and what they are looking for? Then I have some good news! I've finally completed a full update of the Monster List of Picture Book Publishers. Of course, this is thanks to the time off I've had from work because of the quarantine but we've gotta take positivity where we can I suppose.

Publishing is in an uncertain place, just as pretty much everything else is in the world right now. But, books are still being made. Picture books take an average of like 2 years to be published so publishers still need to look toward their future lists. (No I did not look up this statistic, it just seems to be an average from what I've seen.) There may very well be changes along the way as publishers figure out how to make things work during this epidemic. I'd be surprised if there wasn't. But putting our work out there is what writers do, so I for one am not going to let that uncertainty stop me. Kids need books, maybe now more than ever.
I am very excited to have gotten this Monster List updated. All the links have been checked and are working and go straight to submission guidelines. I removed quite a few publishers who were no longer accepting submissions but did leave some on the list that I am hoping may be open once again and want to keep an eye on. I also put in pertinent information on what the publisher is looking for in parenthesis where I found that info. And guess what? The list is looking quite monstrous and has 100 publishers on it! I hope that you'll find it helpful whether you are wanting to study up on publishers of picture books or are ready to start submitting a manuscript to.

As always, a monstrous THANK YOU to my friend Dana Carey for the amazing Monster List logos. I can't help but wish that image could be used to create an entire book, I just love it!
Did you know that there is an International Unicorn Day? Isn't that fabulous?! Hearing about Unicorn Day gave me that fun, sparkly feeling and I was inspired to come up with some activities for kids to do during the quarantine. Yes, Unicorn Day has passed (It's on April 9th) but it seems to me that every day is Unicorn Day! And why not? Having fun and being kind is something we can do anytime!

My amazing webmaster (and daughter) put together a fun Unicorn Day page for my website. Kids can find inspiration to get creative with Unicorn and Yeti: make a fancy hat, be a unicorn, write a letter to Unicorn and Yeti, and more! I hope that if you have children or students and are looking for some book-related or Unicorn and Yeti related activities to do, that you will find something they'll like. Just go to https://www.heatherayrisburnell.com/unicorn-day and check it out!

And if you have access to the Unicorn and Yeti books don't forget about the fun writing and drawing prompts at the ends of the books. Hazel shows step by step how to draw Unicorn in book 1, Yeti in book 2, and their bowl of ice cream and peaches in book 3. It's amazing what you can draw when you follow the steps! And educators, Scholastic has given permission to read their books online. That includes Unicorn and Yeti. See the Scholastic Digital Read Aloud Guidelines for details.

Of course, if anyone wants to share what they've done I'd love to see it! You can post in the comments here or I give other options on the Unicorn Day page. Most of all, I hope you have fun!

Hang in there and find your sparkle where you can.

xoxo
Hello friends,

I hope that you are all being very careful and staying safe! I have some news I've been holding off on sharing. It feels strange to share happy news right now. But the more I think about it, the more I've come to realize that good things, no matter how small, are something we need, especially when times are hard. So I want to share... Unicorn and Yeti book 4 has a cover!

Hazel Quintanilla and the team at Scholastic have been working hard and they have done it again. They've made another cover full of happiness that shows the heart of our next book in the Unicorn and Yeti series. I am in love! Look at that scarf! Those leg warmers! That hat! Of course, I love the Unicorn and Yeti logo that has been on every book. The letter styling of the title makes it look so fun! The cover color is happy and bright!

Cheer Up is the 4th book in the Unicorn and Yeti series and in it, the two friends do some of those little things we do to try to help each other feel happy. It certainly seems we can all be a friend and try to help cheer each other up these days.

Just like Unicorn and Yeti books 1-3, Cheer Up will have three stories that can be read separately or all in a row. The stories include Unicorn having a gift for Yeti, but Yeti *gasp* not having one for Unicorn, Yeti sharing the love of crunching icicles, and Unicorn giving it a try, and Yeti thinking the dark forest is pretty but Unicorn perhaps needing to see things from a different perspective. And as you can see, Yeti knits! I can't wait for everyone to see the knitting that goes on in this book. Hazel created such fun illustrations and as she said, Yeti has skills!

Unicorn and Yeti Cheer Up will release in October 2020 and is available for pre-order now from IndieBound, Amazon, or your favorite book retailer.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">As a parent, librarian, and children's book author I absolutely love book-related crafts. They're a great way to extend a story (and the learning) plus they're just plain fun! I put together a Yeti craft that I totally adore. It doesn't take many supplies, is cheap, and can come out looking like Yeti who was designed by Hazel Quintanilla for our Unicorn and Yeti series. And, of course, it can be a unique creation with any face design and as much (or as little) fur as the maker wants!
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">If you're a librarian you're probably already thinking about Summer... because Summer Reading is coming! This year's theme of the Collaborative Summer Library Program is Imagine Your Story. I love this theme because it encompasses so, so much. Just as with imagination, the possibilities are endless! I personally am hoping to fill my library with rainbows and unicorns, yetis and dragons, and as much fantasy fun as I can find the time to put together!
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">

I hope I've made it easy to follow. It's a great craft to do with just one child or a whole group. I plan on doing this craft at my library this summer and I cannot wait!
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">

Directions:

Use the Yeti craft template, a toilet paper tube, or cut a strip of cardstock about 4" wide.

If you used cardstock, roll it into a tube and tape it together.

Use the Yeti craft template or cut two strips of white cardstock or stiff paper approximately 3ā long and Ā¾ā wide for arms. Tape one on each side of the tube at arm height, about Ā¼ of the way down the tube.

Use the Yeti craft template or cut an oval out of colored paper. Draw your Yeti face onto the oval, then glue your face onto the tube. (A glue stick works well for this but liquid glue will do as well!)

Stretch and tear cotton balls to use as fur. Glue them onto your Yeti body and arms. Keep gluing on cotton balls until your Yeti has as much fur as you want.

Fill in the top of your Yeti's head by gluing in cotton. (*Tip - If you fold and glue some of the cotton
balls over the top (head) hole it will help hold the other cotton
balls on when you fill in the top of the head.)

Use the template or lightly trace around the bottom of the Yeti onto card stock and add feet to the traced circle. Cut out. Put glue on the bottom of the Yeti and press feet on.

Now you have your very own Yeti! In SPARKLY NEW FRIENDS, Unicorn makes Yeti a fancy hat to wear. You can make your Yeti a fancy hat too! <span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I'm so excited! I now have an updated, professional-looking website!

I've finally done something that is way past due. I have updated the Monster List of Picture Book Agents! It was fun to finally dig in and get it done. And things have definitely changed! Not only some of the agents and agencies but the way I put the list together.

I used to do a lot of research for the Monster List. I tracked down interviews and linked lists of all the different places you could go to research the listed agent. It was a lot of fun and the way I feel that a writer should do their research when considering which agents to submit their work to.

Those old posts are still up but they are no longer linked on the list. Unfortunately, I don't have time to do that research anymore. And really, if you're looking for an agent it is good for you to do it! So, I've changed the list. It is easier for me and now, because I am not doing so many links, it is a much more monstrously big list for you!

Now you will find a list of agencies with links going directly to the agency submission page. If an agency has pretty clear and easy to find submission wants I simply have that link that takes you to the agency submission page. From the agency website, you can read the agent bios to see which agents are open to picture book submissions, learn about who they represent, and find any links they have provided. Of course, I recommend doing some internet searching as well. Searching keywords such as the agent name + interview or represented by can bring up good current information. Also checking if the agent has a blog or Twitter feed you can peruse can be helpful. There is a bit more information that you'll see at the top of the page when you go there. I have a 'For Writers' page in the works on my blog here where I'll list some helpful links for research. Of course, I'll post when I have it up.

In the meantime, head on over to the Monster List of Picture Book Agents. I hope you have a good time digging into research.

It has been so much fun writing the first three Unicorn and Yeti books! Katie Carella at Scholastic is the best editor I could ever hope for. Hazel Quintanilla brings Unicorn and Yeti to life so fantastically with her fun illustrations. Sarah Dvojack designs the books! And so many other people at Scholastic do so many things that I don't even know about. It is amazing! I have gotten fan letters and photos and nice reviews. After many years of writing, it really has been a dream come true. Of course, this is many thanks to my awesome agent, Sean McCarthy.

So, I am thrilled to share that Katie Carella has acquired three more Unicorn and Yeti books! We're working on them now and I'm looking forward to sharing more details when I can. I absolutely love the look and feel of the entire Scholastic Acorn line and am thrilled to get to be a part of bringing three more Unicorn and Yeti books into the world! Unicorn and Yeti book 3 releases today! Friends Rock makes the Unicorn and Yeti series a sparkly trio of books for kids who are learning to read (or just like fun stories!) Like the first two books, there are 3 stories in this third book. In Friends Rock, Unicorn and Yeti are learning to shareā¦ a swing, peaches and ice cream, and a sparkly rock, and of course they figure things out in their Unicorn and Yeti way.

I could not ask for a better team than the one I have at Scholastic Acorn! I do so love this second book in the Unicorn and Yeti Series. Iām so excited to share the news! Scholastic is launching a brand new line and a book I wrote, UNICORN AND YETI: SPARKLY NEW FRIENDS is part of the launch! I canāt help but be thrilled to have a book publishing not only with Scholastic at a new imprint, but alongside amazing author/illustrators Jonathan Fenske, Norm Feuti, and Dav Pilkey. Illustrator Hazel Quintanilla has brought Unicorn and Yeti to life and itās the perfect match. I just canāt imagine Unicorn and Yeti any other way.

I've unwittingly abandoned my little blog that I started so many years ago at the encouragement of my wonderful critique partners. It sure has been a fun journey. How things have changed from way back when I would shudder to post a word anywhere online. Now I blab all over the internet and moderate Sub It Club where I am just happy to be able to keep up in the chat room when I can.

The thing is, now I'm a full-time Branch Librarian and that work (along with being a parent of three busy kids and helping run a garlic farm, ever so slightly as my husband tries to make it for me) can be all-consuming. Patron use of 'my' library has grown tremendously over the past year and a half. I am proud to have helped it become an even bigger part of the community and am so pleased that so many people are using the library to their advantage. Of course, I may say 'my' library but it belongs to everyone, that is one of the fabulous things about libraries! I am just the caretaker. Be that as it may, with all of this newly used energy going to the library, something had to give. And though it was not in my plan it seems that blogging has been it.

But I have managed to keep writing books. I mean, I suspect my agent would be disappointed with me if I stopped and frankly, I would be unhappy with me as well. I am sad to say that I have posted none of my news here until now, but my agent Sean McCarthy and I have sold a series of books to the new Scholastic Acorn imprint for beginning readers and it is so very exciting! UNICORN AND YETI: SPARKLY NEW FRIENDS releases on April 30th! I feel so lucky to be working with amazing editor Katie Carella and the fabulous team at Scholastic. Hazel Quintanilla is Unicorn and Yeti's illustrator and I could not be more thrilled with how she has brought them to life. I just love them so. The release of two more Unicorn and Yeti books: A GOOD TEAM and FRIENDS ROCK follow in July and October. Pretty cool huh? If you want to see the info and happenings with my new series I invite you to come check out my new website HeatherAyrisBurnell.com.
Thank you to all of you who still frolic here for writing advice, agent and publisher listings, and even sign up for my newsletter. I have not decided what exactly I will do with this blog. But this is not really the end. I, of course, have ideas for migrating the well-used info to my other sites where it can still be useful, but for now and really the foreseeable future, I am leaving it up for you to use if you need it.
I found her because she entered the giveaway for my book, KICK! JUMP! CHOP! THE ADVENTURES OF THE NINJABREAD MAN, that was happening through Ninjas Read. Miss Gee, known as @MsGeeLvsBooks on Twitter, is a 2nd grade teacher and an aspiring teacher-librarian. Sounds just like my type of gal! When I followed Ms. Gee I had no idea I was entering a contest. And a really cool one at that! Not long after I received this tweet:

Unexpected and exciting! I got in touch with Ms. Gee and soon this cute little pink package arrived. I had run to the post office before work so I went straight to my favorite part of the library, the children's section amongst the picture books, of course, to find out what was inside the package!

I opened it up and there was the most adorable snail I had ever seen! (I put the book up on my shelf to admire it while I read the card!) Ms. Gee's class chose ESCARGOT written by Dashka Slater and illustrated by Sydney Hanson as their favorite book!

Now, I see a lot of books every single day in my work at the library and I was super excited not only because of the beautiful illustrations and the fact that this is a book about a snail. I love snails! I was excited because I had never seen this book before and oh my gosh do I love the story! You see Escargot is a beautiful snail from France and he simply wants two things: to be your favorite animal and to eat the fabulous salad at the end of the book. But wait! There is a carrot and that is trouble. Big, big trouble!

Oooo, la la! I cannot wait to share this story with the kids who come to the library for storytime and tell them about Ms. Gee's 2nd grade class in Virginia and how they chose this very book as their favorite!

Miss Gee won the copy of my book in the Ninjas Read giveaway. I had absolutely nothing to do with picking the winner on that. It was completely run by the amazing ninja writer, Corey Rosen Schwartz. I'm no mathematician but there has got to be a mathematical lesson in probability on that! Maybe Corey could help us out. Her new book, TWINDERELLA, is a mathy fractioned fairytale.

Mathematics aside, I love that luck, Ninjas Read, and Twitter connected me with this fun new book and let me have a peek into what a second grade class on the other side of the United States from me loves.

Well, here's something amazing. I've been going about life, writing, taking care of my kids, growing and shipping garlic, administrating Sub it Club... I've also got a new job as a Branch Librarian which is super fun. And now, all of a sudden I realize that I have a book coming out very soon. It's funny how fast it has come up. It's time I showed you lovely readers of my oft neglected blog my book cover!

It's red! I love red. Red is actually the accent color in my library. (My library. Hee hee! It belongs to everyone. I am just there the most.) We have these big comfy red chairs to sit and read in. They are amazing.

Anyway, back to the book! The illustrations are cut paper, which gives it a kickin' look (if you ask me). They were created by Bomboland. an illustration studio in Italy that has done tons of amazing work. Check it out! I love the way the ninjabread man is kicking right through the M. High-ya! And the dot on the i is a throwing star--cookie style of course.

The book is a retelling of the classic Gingerbread Man story, with a ninja twist. Here's the description from the publisher:

<span style="background-color: white; color: #21282d; font-family: "lato" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.8097px;">Get ready to crumble! Filled with high-spirited hijinks, Kick! Chop! Jump!<span style="background-color: white; color: #21282d; font-family: "lato" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.8097px;"> brings a whole new spice level to the fun, familiar tale of the āGingerbread Man.ā When sparring in his dojo gets stale, Sensei bakes the ultimate fighting partner: the Ninjabread Man! One by one, all the masters battle the Ninjabread Man to see who can gobble him up. But when Fox snatches the crafty cookie, who can save him then? With its punny text and gorgeous cut-paper art, this tasty tale is perfect for kids who love action, adventure, and cookies!
